Hazards of reading the “Report on Cell Tower Radiation”
Prof. Girish Kumar of the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Bombay submitted to the Department of Telecom a document titled “Report on Cell Tower Radiation” . In fact, a senior journalist brought it to my notice. He felt that the report is too scary. The report listed symptoms and diseases allegedly caused by electromagnetic radiation. The only items not included in it were jealousy and baldness!
The author mined part of the scary data from “papers” of Arthur Firstenberg, the founder director of the “Cellular phone task force” which is “dedicated to halting the expansion of wireless technology because it cannot be made safe”. Firstenberg filed and lost many suits against the spread of wireless technology. It is hazardous to read the “Report on Cell Tower Radiation”!!
Professor Girish Kumar’s report was an eye opener to me. I have sent it to few specialists. Their comments were equally revealing. What is disturbing is that the report got undeserved credibility as it emerged from IIT Bombay. The report is a classic example of a biased and unscientific study. The report needs careful analysis as most of the scary observations on the biological effects of cell tower/phone radiation uncritically published in some of our leading news papers emerge from it.
One news paper which deserves special mention is The Hindustan Times. I brought authentic reports from responsible organizations such as the UK Health Protection Agency to the notice of the reporter who wrote a series of reports. The Hindustan Times continued to parrot Professor Girish Kumar’s sound bites as gospel truth. Most of these appeared prominently highlighted in every report. The paper proudly claimed that it described the hazards of cell tower/phone radiation!.
It did not matter whether the report has any scientific merit or not!
